The Infinite Nature of Magazine Design

The latest issue of Infinite Magazine for Edinburgh Research and Innovation at The University of Edinburgh is complete. This is the third year in a row we have had the pleasure of working on Infinite. From Infinite design opportunities, where we undertook the redesign and publishing of Infinite, to making great design even better, to this year’s exploration into the infinite nature of the design world.

After two successful years, it was important to take this year’s magazine design to infinity and beyond. In order to do this, we created a fresh new design approach with professional, contemporary layouts and a new colour palette. To complement this and the lead story, a new style of portrait photography was adopted on the front cover to showcase the inventor with his technology. We also designed a number of infographics to bring the information to life, alongside eye-catching imagery providing a backdrop to certain spreads, really making the pages pop.

Alex Proudfoot, Marketing Manager at Edinburgh Research and Innovation, says: “For the past three years, Hookson have continually raised the already high bar for the design of the magazine they have set on each subsequent occasion, to ensure our magazine remains a highly respected and well-received magazine for the business community, demonstrating how the University of Edinburgh is engaging with industry to boost innovation.”

Each year Infinite is published to showcase some of the great leaps made within the University of Edinburgh in research, innovation and entrepreneurial activities. This year we had a particularly fascinating lead story, undoubtedly worthy of your attention. Professor Harold Haas, or ‘the father of Li-Fi’, takes his place on the front cover of Infinite. Li-Fi, or light fidelity, is ‘the world’s answer to unsustainable demand for wireless bandwidth’ and this article celebrates the opening of the University’s new Li-Fi Research and Development Centre. We also recently created the branding and website for the Li-Fi Centre.
